The United Kingdom and the United States have agreed to a important commercial pact that will ensure no duties on UK drug products going into the US market.

The Terms of the Deal

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to boost funding on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This move guarantees that tariffs on these vital products will remain at nothing for a period of the next three years.

This development is in response to recent warnings to dramatically increase import taxes on branded drug products, with figures mentioned as high as one hundred percent.

"This agreement with the UK reinforces the worldwide climate for new treatments and introduces much-needed equity to transatlantic medicine commerce," a release declared.

Economic Importance

Pharmaceuticals are one of the Britain's biggest export categories to the America, which is easily the biggest destination for large companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Statistics show that in the one-year period to the end of September, the UK shipped medicines worth billions to the US. This value represented nearly one-fifth of total UK exports in that period.

"This agreement secures jobs, boosts investment and paves the way for the UK to become a worldwide center for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary stated.

Detailed UK Commitments

The agreement includes several specific changes from the United Kingdom:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it considers new therapies to be unaffordable by twenty-five percent.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a goal to double total NHS spending on drugs from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Rebate Cap: The percentage drug companies must return to the NHS to stay within budget will be limited at 15%. Last year, refunds exceeded twenty percent.

Broader Context

The pact takes place against a long-running row between the pharmaceutical industry and the ministers over drug pricing and approval rates.

The disagreement were intensified by assertions that US patients were paying a premium for the equivalent treatments than people in the Britain and the EU.

In recent months, several large drug company projects in the UK have been paused or scrapped, while major funding commitments have been announced toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS needed to invest a greater share on drugs, noting that its expenditure on drugs had decreased as a percentage of its overall budget over the previous ten-year period.
