Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic suffered a "heartbreaking" knee injury as the Nuggets lost 147-123 against the Heat.

The Serbian center sustained the injury in the latter stages of the opening half during an accidental coming together with team-mate Jones.

Jones landed on the foot of the MVP, who immediately collapsed to the floor grabbing his leg.

The 30-year-old, who is leading the NBA season in rebounds and dimes, recorded a score of 21 points and eight assists in the game prior to sustaining the setback.

The player will have an MRI on the following day to evaluate the extent of the injury.

"Right away, Jokic realized he was hurt," said Nuggets coach David Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Anyone that gets hurt, that's tough to see, particularly a player as talented as he is. We will know more tomorrow."

"We'll move on as a team. Clearly, currently, I'm more worried just about Jokic personally and the frustration of going through an event of that nature."
