The Showrunner Reveals He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that Pluribus would emerge as a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the hit program reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It feels like constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's by design. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Does the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the writers are not listening by public opinion, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… sort of.
“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
