The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by artist the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.
But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
