The Mayor-Elect affirms he will live in the iconic Gracie Mansion
The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core platform, hesitated to declare this decision immediately following his victory in November.
"The choice rested on the security of my family and the need to focusing all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda voters supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area renowned for its vibrant cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will always live inside me and my work," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
Yet his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he is from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a space for public city functions, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience an environment very different than his modest Astoria digs.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which is said to has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, a policy where the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses outpaces what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
