The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Star Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

When I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his career in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough

That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.

A month later, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his spells at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

With his current club, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the main top prize down the line.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the game.
