The Gory Animated Film Ending That Haunts Viewers

Among every adult-oriented cartoon movies I’ve personally watched, nothing has remained with me quite like the dread-soaked conclusion of a viscerally violent and overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.

In the year 2015, the Spanish filmmaker created a grim, melancholy , often savage universe that included several minor , desolate glimmers of optimism.

Although The Unicorn Wars seems like it came from an impulse to expand animation further, the director clarified that it was more an effort to communicate a global, cross-cultural theme regarding “the common origin of each battle.”

This theme is communicated through a band of brightly hued teddy bears , openly modeled after a popular line of lovable characters.

Maturing in a society focused on aggression and the war machine, many of these creatures are obsessed with exterminating the mythical beasts, due to a holy book that tells the bears they previously were rulers of the woodland, before the horned beings forced them out.

A few haven’t fully bought into the propaganda, and choose to try out narcotics and engage sexually in the woods.

Unlike their friendly counterparts, these colorful critters have visible genitals , obvious libidos.

For a particular especially vicious, pessimistic creature, the bear named Bluey, the war with unicorns becomes a route toward dominance — and specifically to supremacy above his softer, nicer brother the character Tubby.

The character acts as a tormentor and a seeming psychopath , and as horror dominates his group and takes his teammates sequentially, he seizes increasingly control for himself, in increasingly bloody, harmful methods.

At the same time, these mythical beings are enduring their own terror, in the form of a growing, harmful creature in their habitat.

“In the early stages, it feels like a comedy,” the filmmaker said. “However it turns into a more dramatic and sorrowful movie. And in the finale, it transforms into a terrifying movie.”

The Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like among the whimsical films by a legendary filmmaker, that uncover a mischievous joy in permitting animated figures swear, shoot each other, or have intimate relations.

Afterward it becomes more akin to a darker work by that same creator, featuring progressively graphic violence and a palpable relation to the actual horror of war.

Ultimately, it’s a complete extreme drama bloodbath.

The terror that turns the film a perfect Halloween watch kicks in much sooner than that description suggests.

Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore lovers of violence, for enthusiasts of extreme cinema who desire to watch something they’ve never viewed until now, and can endure a plot that offers unflinching brutality.

View it in a dimly lit space with no disturbances, and the finale will dig into your mind and stay with you.
