The golfing superstar celebrates Sports Personality triumph with twin accolades.

Moments before the announcement, a trepidatious idea raced through Rory McIlroy's mind. He said he was concerned, "Please don't let it be an F1 driver this time."

"Tonight represents a fantastic night for golf," he stated. "Golf was recognized in such a significant way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and hopefully we can capitalize on that."

On this occasion, however, there was no late twist. The outcome was clear, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to enjoy a standout evening for both himself and the team winners, who were honored as team of the year.

Constant Motion

Choosing not to stay for the aftershow party, McIlroy was already focusing on his next sporting adventure. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was flying right back to the sunshine state.

"It's been a frantic 24 hours," McIlroy explained. "My plan is for a little bit of downtime over Christmas."

Unfinished Business

However, McIlroy stated he has no desire to slow down, notwithstanding achieving the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "I am confident I've got a few good years in me," he claimed.

"Additional major championships, tour championships, Ryder Cups, that's the target. But as long as you feel like you can keep progressing and have the desire, that's the essential part."

Team Triumph

Elsewhere, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the team award, also applauded golf's remarkable night and his great friend's personal achievement.

"They are the memories that will live with us forever so to get the people's vote for that is amazing," he commented. "Witnessing it Rory receive that award, I think he deserves it so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third player from golf to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood chuckled before quipping, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"

Future Goals

He is aiming to at last capture his maiden major next year but he understands McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "If you want to be the ultimate competitor, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to improve," he noted.

Football Loyalty

Before McIlroy left, a last query arose. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been asked to parade his trophies at Old Trafford before. So could he be tempted to do it again after his new triumphs?

"Provided that they halt the flow of so many goals on their own pitch," McIlroy responded with a laugh. "They're getting better. There's a touch of hope around."

After a remarkable year, it's understandable that Rory McIlroy is looking on the positive aspects.
