The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a young woman harboring several human souls within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
