Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
