Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 people perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
