French authorities will start intercepting small boats in Channel after UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin intercepting small boats in the English Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the President asking him to back the plan and stating there currently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French police have infrequently intervened to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police representative says personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a possible method to disable the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant advancement, coming after a short-lived shift towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the previous government official left government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be seeking ways to adjust to evade detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
