Eurovision Was Once a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.
A new acronym emerged a few months into the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, as stated by health professionals such as child health specialists. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to attend to a child who has been bereaved of their whole family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in many doctors returning from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.
A Living Nightmare Despite a Reported Truce
Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials rejects these accusations, just as it denies all charges it is charged with. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, apparently, is what unity resembles.
Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.
A Double Standard
Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy
Eurovision marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of someone in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. An institution that once promoted togetherness has transformed into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
