Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his decision to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite months of public tension between the pair of Democrats.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Just last month, the mayor had lashed out at Cuomo, calling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a recent development, Adams changed his position, announcing he now intends to campaign alongside Cuomo in communities where he holds significant backing.
“I think that it is imperative to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have suffered from gentrification on how important this election is,” Adams remarked.
The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their rents increase due to neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”
Election Landscape and Current Developments
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and progressive candidate his main rival, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest internationally and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.
In a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent declared they would reject the mayor's support if extended.
Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.
At an separate media briefing on the same day, Adams answered reporters asking about the endorsement plan by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”
The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at the famous arena, which took place immediately following a heated mayoral debate.
