England to Begin Euro 2028 Journey at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

England’s men’s team will embark on their Euro 2028 adventure at the Manchester City’s stadium, provided that they secure the relatively straightforward qualification for a championship taking place in the bulk of Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

City’s stadium has not hosted an Three Lions fixture since May 2016, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is almost certain to welcome the Three Lions for their first match on a Saturday in June 2028.

England are planned to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, should they win their group, their last-16 tie would occur at St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean beginning the knockouts at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Championship Kickoff and Demonstration

The championship was unveiled at an event in a London landmark on Wednesday night. Senior figures from the tournament organizers and the host FAs were heckled as they approached the location by about 50 protesters, who called for Israel to be kicked out from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.

Signs were held up with slogans stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”

Event Schedule

The inaugural fixture of the tournament will be played at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will include the Welsh team if they qualify.

Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the final, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5pm.

It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be used for European club finals from next season, will cater to households and help connect with a broader range of audiences.

Host Nations

The Republic of Ireland are set to play their initial fixture at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.

The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be set aside for any that miss out on the tournament through the standard process.

Stadiums and Elimination Phase

Aston Villa’s stadium and The North London arena finalize the nine host stadiums. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches played at each country’s national stadium.

The qualifying draw will be staged in Belfast, which was excluded as a host city last year when it became clear the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.

Official Statement

“It will be a competition for the supporters and a showcase of everything we value about the sport – its emotion and power to bring people together.”

More than three million tickets, a unprecedented number for a Euro tournament, are expected to be offered to attendees.
