Former President Trump indicated this past weekend that the Russian-prepared peace plan was "not my final offer", after intense backlash from Ukraine's leaders and commentators who likened it to a Munich pact of 1938 between Neville Chamberlain and Adolf Hitler.

During short comments from the White House, Trump told journalists: Our goal is to achieve peace. It should’ve happened a long time ago … we’re trying to get it ended, one way or the other we have to get it ended."

Upcoming Switzerland Negotiations Include Multiple Countries

Ukrainian and American delegates are scheduled to meet in Switzerland on Sunday for discussions on this proposal. Security officials from Germany, France, and the UK will also participate in the talks there.

Prior to the talks, American lawmakers told media outlets that Secretary of State Marco Rubio contacted them while en route to Switzerland for clarification on the nature of the leaked plan. Zelenskyy has attempted to engage constructively with a White House apparently intent to resolve the war based on Russian conditions. He has made clear that he will not surrender the nation's independence or disregard the constitutional framework that enshrines the country’s current borders.

At a meeting held in South Africa, leaders from the G20 and EU representatives released a joint statement opposing the proposed deal, stating it needs further refinement. The statement indicated that EU and Nato members must be involved regarding certain clauses, which rule out Kyiv’s Nato membership and put conditions on its future EU accession.

Responses from Ukrainians to the proposal, drawn up by Putin’s envoy and Trump’s representative, have been largely negative. Analysts argued it was a blueprint for further Russian aggression: targeting not just Ukraine but other European regions too.

Speaking in Kyiv’s Golden Gate metro station, Dmytro Sariskyi, 21, commented that Moscow has attempted to control Ukraine politically and territorially over many years. The agreement offered "barely anything" in the proposed deal and maintained troops in Ukraine. "I think the deal is an attempt to break Ukraine and force unjust conditions on us," he said.

If Zelenskyy signed off on the proposals it would be compelled to give up its freedoms, he added.
