RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
