Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the influential style architect behind some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
